Carlos Jaramillo spent most of the 2007 racing season on the sidelines, putting his time and money into a start-up salvage business.
Since finally getting on track in late July, he’s been taking care of business there, too. After going winless in his first year of Open Wheel Modified competition, he’s won twice at Dublin Motor Speedway and was leading a third race before suffering a flat tire. Last Saturday, he won the richest Open Wheel event of the season at Fayetteville Motor Speedway.
The biggest factor is his immediate dash to the front of the pack, he said, is his race car, built by Hassy Chassis of Star City, W.Va.
“It’s like driving a Chevette and jumping into a Cadillac,” he said. “There’s just no comparison to my old car. It’s just that much of a better car.”
Saturday’s win was doubly special, and not because of the $1,500 first prize. His father, Carlos Jr., celebrated a birthday Saturday, and Carlos III beat the cream of the crop of Open Wheel drivers in the region.
“I wanted to win against all the season drivers,” he said, mentioning Ricky Boahn, Hank Edwards, Jeffrey Tyndall and others.
“I wanted to at least be able to run with them,” he added, “and to beat them was the biggest, most meaningful thing.”
